| Your name, whether it’s your business name, your fake DJ name or your real name is really all you’ve got.
When I was in Junior High School (middle school), one of my fellow students was making fun of the teacher’s name. Since the teacher was quite a hothead, and this was the era when teacher’s were allowed to beat the daylights out of any student they felt like, I was a little surprised at his response.
He told the 9th grader that “If you think about it, your name is all you really have.” It didn’t quite sink in at that age, but I never forgot what he said. With enough thought, I think I’ve figured it out.
Your name is everything about you, rolled up into one simple word (or words.) Your name is your honesty, your way of doing business, the car you drive, the equipment you have. It’s your presentation; the way you dress, speak, look, smell and walk.
Your name is your business image. It’s your prices, your song selection and your interaction with people. It’s the wording of your contract, the speediness of your service and your follow through. Your name is the stories people are telling about you. How you react. How much you weigh. How you speak. What you say. How you keep your word.
So what can you do to build up the credibility of your name? First, be honest. One exageration, or overpromise is all it takes for someone to never want to do business with you again. It also encourages them to spread the word to others about you in a negative way.
Next, don't mislead someone. Tricking someone into buying your product with confusing language, or convieniently leaving important, material items out of the information you give them may get you the sale, but it won't get you referrals to your business.
Further, you need to be genuine. Pretending to be genuine is not being genuine. People want to deal with others they trust. If you are rushing to get somone to do what you want them to, they will have a hard time trusting you. Find out what they need, and if you don't offer a solution to their problem move on. Hustling someone for a buck will cost you a lot of bucks down the road when your name is destroyed.
It doesn't matter what business you are in. I'm in the Disc Jockey business. You might be in the real estate business. It's all the same when it comes to your name.
Your name is everything you say and do all rolled into one large perception which is easily summed up by just saying your name. Your name is really all you’ve got. What does yours say about you?
