Genetic Diseases

I am currently a Creative Writing major at the University of Southern California. Fortunately for me, the majority of the courses that I am taking are directly related to my choice of major. Other classes that I take may not directly go towards my interest in creative writing, but they are humanities-based classes such as Art History, English, and Political Science. Unfortunately for me, I get stuck with one or two courses each semester in which I cannot rely on my own natural talents to succeed. For me, this course of the moment, is Biology. When I have a class like this, I try as best as I can to obtain outside help to ensure my own success. A recent assignment in class about RNA and DNA sent me to the internet to find information on genetic disorders. http://www.listof.org/genetic-disorders.html was an internet website I was able to find that provided me with a comprehensive list of genetic disorders. This was immediately helpful to me on two different fronts. The first was that I was provided with a simple yet accurate description of what a genetic disorder is. This information included information on how genetic disorders are passed, how genetic testing is done, and the possible effects of a genetic disorder. I learned that some genetic diseases are caused by mutations, and others are caused by missing chromosomes or extra chromosomes. The information I received about early testing was the encouragement I needed to focus my assignment on the life saving possibilities of early detection. The website provides a list of genetic diseases as well, and each of these can be further investigated from there. This list of genetic diseases was immeasurably helpful to the research that I was doing on http://www.listof.org/genetic-disorders.html. When I began my biology assignment, my knowledge on the topic of genetic diseases was so lacking, that I could not even begin to do a proper Google search, let alone a search of a scientific or other research-oriented database. Having the names of genetic disorders available to me allowed me to leverage search engines, research databases, and even the library at my university to maximum effect. I eventually focused my research on trisomy 13 and the benefits of amniocentesis in ensuring the best life quality and expectancy in infants who have this disorder. I learned about this condition from the list of genetic disorders provided by http://www.listof.org/genetic-disorders.html. It bears mentioning that while I happened to find this website while doing research for a biology assignment, I also learned that there are lists provided relating to multiple topics. On the right side of the website, there are links to many other lists. Some of these lists are academic in nature. These include but are not limited to, a list of Native American tribes, a list of presidents, and a list of Civil War battles. Other lists can assist someone with improving their health, including a list of low carbohydrate foods, list of high fiber foods, and a list of weight loss programs. A person who is interested in trivia or simple, personal development might enjoy a list of cartoon characters, list of baby girl's names, or a list of famous inventors. I love lists. They provide a start point for much more detailed research, as they did for my biology project. genetic disorder list, list of genetic diseases
